My Writing Process….Beyond the Keyboard.

The writing process can be daunting.  How do I get started? What should the book be about? When will I find the time?

For me, it was finding an accountability program that could push me along. I knew I could write, but I am one that when I have a tight deadline I tend to stay more focused.

I had tried writing a book in the past and never made it past the outline phase.  I did the brainstorming of ideas, and had identified the general topic, but there is where I would get stuck. Staring at the screen, watching that cursor blink, and NOTHING! I had stalled.

I was overwhelmed by the directions I could go from that point. Do I start from Chapter 1 and work forward? Do I pick and choose different stories to write? I had written a Thesis and a Dissertation, heck, I had even written a book chapter. Why could I not get myself over this hurdle and write something closer to my heart?

It was this past June when I received a DM on my LinkedIn from Eric Koester of Manuscripts. He had reached out to ask if I had ever thought of writing a book. I messaged back that I was too busy and though I had thought about the idea many times, now was just not the time. Kudos to Eric for not taking NO for the final answer. He just wanted to chat. A week later, after our call, I not only had a good idea of the main theme of my book, but I had signed up for their writing program. He also sent me a copy of his book Super Mentors, which has also been a great read to understanding how to curate the right connections for success.

The program offers classes and accountability coaching for the entire writing process. It has been this process that provided the direction I needed to begin writing. What I have now is a nearly completed first draft, and in only 4 months. Who would have thought that would have ever been possible.

I can take some of the credit, I guess.  I did stay disciplined to get up each morning a write. My daily goal was 750 words, but somedays I blew through this goal because the pressure for perfection was off.  All I needed was a shitty first draft. I could do that. The story inside me wanted out and my fingers gave it the outlet. Don’t get me wrong, I still fear failure and that the book will be a total flop. But I am writing this book for my younger self; for those out there who are trying to grasp onto a better path but need a little encouragement; for those lost and feel they have no direction at all.

What about you? Do you have a book inside you dying to get out? Do you fear rejection for a great idea? Do you feel stuck and want to make a change, but are afraid?

Let me know in the comments or reach out. Let talk. I am happy to share my journey and hope we can empower each other.
